Report Charging infrastructure & smart charging
In addition to the plenary program of the kick-off for the Dutch-German Sustainable Mobility cooperation, two sessions were organized to meet around content.
A group of approximately 30 participants attended the session which focused on the topic ‘Çharging infrastructure and Smart Charging’.
The session aimed at knowledge exchange through panel discussion in order to start identifying common interest for cross-border projects.
The session started with two short openers by the two moderators.
- New Mobility Strategy of the EU
by Mr. Baerte de Brey, Chief International Officer at ElaadNL and Vice President AVERE, European Association for Electromobility
- Lessons learned from NPM on charging infrastructure and smart charging
by Mr. Roland Bent, President of DKE, German Commission for Electrical, Electronic & Information Technologies of DIN and VDE and Chairman of Working Group 6 “Standardization, Norms, Certification and Type Approval” of the NPM
After these introductions, a panel discussion focussed on consumers friendliness and user experience. Panellists Bastian Pfarrherr (Stromnetz Hamburg) and Ellen Hiep (EV Consumer Organization in the Netherlands) reflected on the topic based on their role and vision on how to improve these further.
A second topic for panel discussion with panellists Dominik Ebling (ABB) and Michael Colijn (Heliox) zoomed in on the development of high-power charging for heavy duty vehicles.
Summarized some of the key points that were addressed regarding consumer friendliness:
- crucial regarding user friendliness: price transparency, charging speed, location of charging points etc.
- it’s important all stakeholders work closely together
- EU approach is what we need: international approach, international standards, international pilot projects and cross border cooperation.
- use the matchmaking opportunities: get together with other players in this field and see how you can strengthen each other
- We need informed customers. If we want to have the market doing all these activities and bring standards into operation without governmental regulations, then we need to inform consumers.
- Consumers need to be informed to be able to ask for functionalities. A standard can offer feature, so they can ask suppliers to have this ready in the cars and in the infrastructure.
Regarding infrastructure for heavy duty vehicles:
- step by step approach is needed
- We can’t wait for megawatt charger standard being ready in 2023/2024: we have to start now. With all that we are doing today we have to build the infrastructure in a way it can be upgraded in the future.
- We have to take care of the grid capabilities and involve grid operators in all these discussions.
- In the end it is very obvious we have to work closely together and we need to have platforms where all the stakeholders can come together and work together in practical projects.
